Alternative Therapies and Cancer Treatment

For many cancer patients, using alternative treatments can help with the side effects of cancer medications and the symptoms of their illness. Whether you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, breast cancer or colon cancer, there are a number of complimentary therapies that may help you. Massage Therapy According to the Mayo Clinic, massage therapy is an excellent alternative therapy to use to help with symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, depression and pain that often come with cancer. Cancer patients also report that massage therapy is a good method of addressing feelings of stress. Light touch therapy is the most recommended form of massage treatment for cancer patients. If a patient is currently undergoing radiation therapy, it is important to inform the massage therapist so they can avoid the targeted area of treatment for your comfort. Cancer patients often find that getting regular massages helps them relax and feel better afterward. They typically are able to sleep better and may even see an improvement in their appetite as their stress levels decrease. Massage therapy also helps manage pain for many cancer patients and is a good alternative to narcotic pain medications. Exercise Another alternative therapy that can be effective to manage fatigue, pain and appetite is exercise or movement therapy. For many cancer patients, it may seem counterintuitive, but being active helps improve flexibility and muscle strength and improves feelings of exhaustion. For many cancer patients, regular physical activity also helps with improving overall quality of life. In addition to improved physical conditioning, cancer patients often feel better about their appearance when they exercise regularly. They may begin to feel more interested in social activities, helping their emotional health. Yoga Yoga is another form of movement and alternative approach to cancer that can help with managing symptoms. Yoga improves flexibility and stamina. It also helps with fatigue and relaxation. There are many different types of yoga, so it is important to try out a few to find one that works well for your needs. Yoga is also recommended to help improve problems with sleep and reduce anxiety. One excellent approach to yoga is Nia. Nia combines elements of yoga, Pilates and meditation. This combination often helps cancer patients find relaxation.
