Prenatal Pilates Course with Yoga Mama

Prenatal Pilates can help retrain your muscles to accommodate to the changes your body is undergoing throughout your pregnancy. Many women find Pilates helps some of the common ailments associated with pregnancy such as back and pelvic pain. It is a safe and effective way to strengthen the core muscles including the pelvic floor. It is recommend you attend in the second or third trimester.

Supporting pregnant students in general yoga classes- CPD workshop.

Cherie Lathey will be holding a CPD workshop for yoga teachers at The Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy on Sunday 29th March 2015. The subject of the workshop is "Supporting Pregnant Students in General Yoga Classes". For full information about the workshop and booking details, see below.


Pregnancy is an amazing personal journey for a woman, both mentally and physically. Practising yoga during pregnancy can help women adapt to these changes in a positive way.

Many yoga teachers often feel they do not have enough information or the confidence to integrate pregnant women into their general classes. This one day CPD workshop will be led by Cherie Lathey, Director and Senior Yoga Teacher of Yoga Mama, and is approved by Yoga Alliance UK. This will be both a discussion and practical workshop. Teachers will leave feeling confident they have the relevant information to safely support their pregnant students.

The workshop will include:
  • General precautions and guidelines
  • How hormones can affect your student both physically and emotionally
  • Common ailments of pregnancy and how to work with these to ease symptoms
  • The importance of transitional poses within a class
  • Suitable asana (poses) and modifications
  • Suitable breath work (pranayama)
  • Suitable rest poses
  • Mula bandha and the pelvic floor
  • Optimal foetal positioning for later stages of pregnancy

Ashtanga yoga with Nancy Gilgoff in London 2015

8, 9 AND 10 SEPTEMBER 2015

We are delighted to announce that internationally renowned ashtanga yoga teacher, Nancy Gilgoff, will be returning to Yoga Mama and The Putney Clinic of Physical Therapy in September for three days of Mysore-style ashtanga yoga workshops.

This is a unique opportunity to practice with Nancy, in her only teaching dates in London this year. Book early if you would like to attend, as places will go quickly.


Nancy is widely respected as one of the greatest pioneers of ashtanga yoga to the West. She was one of the first westerners to study ashtanga yoga over 30 years ago with K.Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. She is the director of Maui's House of Yoga and Zen. Her studies have led her to the dharma teachings of the Dalai Lama and the expression of love and compassion for all beings. We are honoured to host Nancy's only workshops in London this year.


  • Tuesday 8th September (8:30am - 11:30am): Mysore style practice followed by Q & A and examining the breath in the practice
  • Wednesday 9th September (8.30am - 11:30am): Mysore style practice followed by Q & A and meditation
  • Thursday 10th September (8:30am): Mysore style practice only

Spring 2015 Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training

Bookings are now being taken on the Yoga Mama Spring 2015 Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training course. This 80-hour course, fully accredited by YogaAlliance UK is open to qualified yoga teachers and trainees and covers the following topics:

  • Asana, pranayama (breathing and relaxation techniques)
  • Sequencing pre and postnatal classes
  • The dos and don'ts of pregnancy yoga
  • Propping and assisting pregnant students
  • Pre and post natal anatomy for yoga
  • Common ailments associated with pregnancy
  • Setting up classes for pregnant students


The course costs £750. However, if you book and pay before 28th February 2015, you can take advantage of the early bird offer of £695.

March 2015 Antenatal Course


Starts Tuesday 17 March, 6:30 - 9pm

The Yoga Mama antenatal course is led by Ally Downey, a midwife with vast experience in antenatal care, delivery suites and postnatal care in both private and public settings. This 5-week course is aimed at couples living in the Putney and south-west London who are expecting their first child, as well as those with children who wish to take a refresher course. The courses are organised in small, friendly groups and are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 - 9pm.

It is advisable to book an antenatal course to start 8-10 weeks before your baby is due; possibly earlier if you are expecting twins. There are 5 (2½ hour) antenatal sessions, with a further postnatal session.


The Yoga Mama antenatal course offers practical information and support for pregnancy, all types of birth and early days with a new baby. There will be the opportunity to include any aspects of birth and the early days with a baby that the group are interested in; as well as the following topics:
  • What to expect during pregnancy (including hormone changes)
  • Physiology of birth, stages of labour (including early signs)
  • Coping strategies during labour (including both natural and medical pain relief)
  • Relaxation, positions for birth and breathing techniques
  • Possible complications during birth
  • Caesarean birth
  • Induction of labour
  • Birth partners role during labour
  • Early days with a new baby including baby care
  • Baby feeding
  • Postnatal recovery
